Stephone Paige Sets Single Game Receiving Record

The Kansas City Chiefs were 5-10 and were facing division rival the San Diego Chargers who was 8-7 and still had playoff hopes. Through 15 games, Stephone Paige had 35 catches for 634 yards and 8 touchdowns. On December 22, 1985, something magical was about to happen. “I told my receivers coach during warmups that I was going to have a big day, that I was going out with a bang,” Paige said. “He laughed at me.” (1)

No joke, Stephone Paige did have a huge day, unfortunately only 18,178 Chiefs fans showed up to see it. In the first quarter, quarterback Todd Blackledge heaved a 56 yard touchdown to Paige. After Blackledge was injured, Kenney launched an 84 yard touchdown pass to Paige. Stephone kept piling up yards. "Henry Marshall came up and said, 'You only need seven yards for the record,' and I said, 'I already got the record,'" Paige grinned. "Then Henry said, 'I don't mean the team record. I mean the pro football record.' That really got me. My heart really started beating fast." In the fourth quarter, Paige caught a 12 yard pass to eclipse the record set by Jim Benton of the Cleveland Rams forty years earlier on November 22, 1945.

For the game, Stephone Paige caught 8 passes for an unbelievable 309 yards and two touchdowns. His 38.6 yards per catch was staggering. “Looking at it on paper, it's unreal,” said Paige. “I still can't believe it. Sometimes entire teams don't have that much in a single game.” When Paige was told the record had been held for forty years, he said, “I wasn't even around then. It makes me feel really nice. I just ran my routes and got open, and when Bill Kenney and Todd Blackledge got it to me, I made the plays.” (1) His record has since been broken by Flipper Anderson of the Rams.
